Higher or Lower is POACH's quick daily football quiz. Eight calls on real player numbers, one chain a day, and a clever twist: the footballer you just judged does not leave the screen. He becomes the next anchor, but the stat changes underneath him. It takes about ninety seconds, you are scored out of eight, and everyone in the world plays the same chain.

How Higher or Lower works

Each round shows you one player's figure and asks a simple question: is the next footballer higher or lower on that same stat? Here is a round of it worked through. You are shown Didier Drogba's Premier League goals, and the next name up is Wayne Rooney. You call higher, because Rooney scored more in the league, and you are right.

Now the pivot. Rooney stays on the board as your new anchor, but the column changes: it is no longer Premier League goals, it is Rooney's England goals, and a fresh challenger steps up against that number. The player carries over, the stat keeps moving, and the chain climbs from a gettable opener to some genuinely fiendish deep cuts by round eight.

Every number is an objective, checkable fact, never our opinion of a player. It is real goals, appearances and international caps, scoped to a competition, a country or a club. Guess the footballer stats correctly eight times in a row for a perfect score.

A few tips

• Read the header. Every round names the exact stat and scope, so it tells you whether you are judging Premier League goals, all-time appearances or England caps. Do not answer on the player alone.
• Mind the scope shift. A striker who barely troubled the Premier League can still have a mountain of international goals. The pivot is where most people slip.
• The opener is a gift. Round one is built to be a famous, gettable call. The chain gets harder as it goes, so bank the early ones and take your time deeper in.
• Protect the streak. It is a chain, so every correct call carries you into the next. A steady run of solid guesses beats one wild swing that ends it early.
