Behind the game

A POACH match has no dice roll. No form, no injuries, no last-minute wonder goal against the run of play. If two players make the same steals and field the same XI, they get the same result, every time. That is a deliberate design choice, and it is the thing that makes the daily fair.

The same puzzle for everyone

Every day, everyone in the world gets the exact same table: the same starting club, the same nineteen rivals in the same order, refreshing at midnight. Nobody gets an easier draw. Nobody gets a luckier bounce. When you compare your run against a friend's, you are comparing two sets of decisions and nothing else. That is what turns POACH from a game of chance into a puzzle.

It is the same idea that makes the big daily games tick. Everyone gets the identical challenge, so the only variable left is you, your ball knowledge and your nerve. There is nowhere to hide and nobody else to blame.

Why we took the luck out

Real football is gloriously random, and half the joy of it is the daft deflection in the last minute. A daily puzzle with a shared leaderboard needs the opposite, though. If a match could swing on chance, two identical runs might end up miles apart, and a leaderboard built on that is worth nothing. Strip the luck out of the ninety minutes and a better run beats a worse one for the only reason that should matter, which is better decisions.

The gamble in POACH lives where it belongs, in the blind steal. You take a risk on what is hidden, but the moment both teams are named, the result follows from the football and nothing else. The unknown is in your information, never in a coin toss.

What it means for the leaderboard

Because everyone plays the same day and no match swings on luck, the leaderboard measures one thing and one thing only, which is how well you raided. Your run is ranked on the best finish you reach against everyone else on that table. No accounts, no names, just scores, so what you are comparing is decisions rather than who caught a lucky break.

There is a quieter brag underneath the finish, as well. You get unlimited goes a day, so the real measure is not just how high you climb but how few attempts it takes you to string a clean run together. The fewer goes, the sharper the ball knowledge.

Ratings you can trust

Determinism only works if the numbers underneath it are consistent, which is why every player rating in POACH comes from our own model, built from public squad facts and applied the same way to every club and season. The same player has the same rating in your game and in everyone else's, on the same day. You can read how that model works on the how we rate players page.

If you want to put the theory into practice, start with the blind steal and raid your weaknesses, then go and try to win the league.
